Enduring difficult conditions earlier in the day, three members of our May 13th West Buttress team reached Denali’s summit! Chris Kuelling, and Haakon Asvang called in from the top!
The team decided to push to the summit today, as forecasts for the coming days indicate more unsettled weather and increasing winds. They climbed up the 1000′ (300m) Autobahn, an infamous rising traverse that leads to Denali Pass, the low point between Denali’s north and south summits. Above this point, the winds increased to a ferocious level and the team paused to reassess their ascent. With highly variable conditions, much of the team turned back to High Camp, while Chris, Haakon and Karl pushed on. Eventually, the weather improved and they enjoyed a beautiful evening on the top of North America.
Here they are!
